This article http://www.rareseeds.com/teach-children-to-love-the-garden/ is from our friends at Baker Creek Heirloom Seed Company.  It's a quick but good read.  Baker Creek Seed company was started by Jere Gettle when he was only 17.  The first year he printed 125 catalogs for friends and family members.  Now, his company prints a 212 page color catalog and mails it to over 350,000 gardeners.  Check out their website: http://www.rareseeds.com/
Baker Creek Seeds has donated hundreds of seeds to the Creslane School Garden during the past three years.

The use of a cloche can really help you during the spring and fall in the Southern Willamette Valley. Be forewarned, a cloche will not raise the lowest nighttime temperature.  It will however, raise the daytime temperature up to twenty degrees.  Check out the outdoor temp. 61.5 and the in the cloche temp. 78.6 at 4pm on a mostly cloudy day.

The CSG class took a field trip to Camas Country Mill on Wednesday the 20th from 2- 5pm.  We met Sue Hunton, Mill owner and Stephanie at 3:00 for our tour.  We learned about farming, harvesting and milling grains.  100 years ago there were many grain mills in the Willamette Valley, for a while there weren't any, now there are three.  Camas Country Mill is one of those three.
The field trip was fun and informative.  Every student witnessed wheat grain being milled, bagged, labeled, and prepared for shipment.
Every student was given one pound of hard wheat flower that they weighed, bagged, and created their own label for.
    Score!!!

At garden class this afternoon Ms. Julie taught students that one way to preserve cabbage is to turn it in to sauerkraut. Every student left class with a 1/2 pint of sauerkraut and instructions for caring for it.  Thanks Julie!!

Creslane Student Gardeners seeded and delivered a variety of seeded trays of vegetable and flower starts to every classroom at Creslane Elementary School this week. Classrooms will raise the plants and then plant them, send them home with students or give them back to the CSG so that we can plant them in the garden.

We had a successful first garden class today despite the hail.  There are 25 kids in grades 3 - 5.  We discussed garden planning, took a tour of the garden, and harvested some radishes.  When I got home I planted tomato seeds.

Garden Class will begin on Monday February 25 and end on May 20th.  The class will occur every Monday we have school, from 2:15 until 3:45PM during that time period.

We are going to have a work party on Friday, August 31st from 10-12.  Bring gloves and water if you are able to help.
